The New Wembly
Access for All Wembley we are working towards creating the ultimate stadium experience for all. Our Access and Inclusion strategy has been developed from the initial principle that the design of the stadium should be inclusive. As builders, and ultimately operators, of the Stadium they are taking into account the needs of disabled visitors. World Stadium Team (the Stadium’s architects Foster and Partners & HOK Sport) have designed facilities following consultation with specialist consultants, user groups (including the National Association of Disabled Supporters), Sport England and Brent Council. The design is in keeping with current legislation and relevant guidance documentation including the Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds 1997 (the Green Guide). The Wembley Stadium design has been developed along a social model of disability, which will be fully realised through training and raising awareness of staff and contractors. Inside the groundAn auditory enhancement system providing 100% coverage of the seating bowl and public concourse areas will be installed. The system will be capable of providing event commentary, information and emergency announcements. There are over 20 lifts and over 30 escalator flights in the new stadium. Dedicated, accessible lifts will be sized for 2 wheelchair users and companions and an attendant. In the event of any evacuation accessible lifts will continue to operate. Accessible toilets will be located in all internal, external and back of house areas. A minimum of one wheelchair accessible WC will be provided per 12-15 wheelchair seating spaces with minimised travel distance from seats (aiming for less than 40m wherever possible). Access to these toilets will be controlled by use of a RADAR key (spare keys will be held by stewards). SeatingThere will be 310 places for wheelchair users and 310 for companions. These seats are distributed throughout the bowl at each of the five levels. One hundred wider spaced seats have also been allocated for those fans bringing working dogs to events and those visitors who are semi-ambulant. All seats within the stadium meet the Green Guide’s requirements for the semi-ambulant disabled. There are no obstructed views of the pitch. All of the wheelchair platforms have been designed to comply with the Green Guide and allow for good sight lines for wheelchair users, even when spectators in front are standing. |
